Against the backdrop of old glory, 56 purebred dog breeds sit proudly in these wonderful patriotic pictures embodying the spirit of the nation. These up-close portraits, by Melanie Brandstein, capture the essence of these beloved canine breeds in images that detail their gentle alert expressions and distinctive coats with love. The dogs’ prominent features are brought to life against the backdrop of the American flag. Using a known symbol of America, I have rendered some new with crisp red, white and blue and some more vintage and weathered by time. Many of the dogs portrayed were once immigrant breeds themselves. I hope these pictures provide deeper layers of interpretation, making us reflect on what it means to be “All American.”
